EE Individualized Access (Portfolio Review)

Assignments for Visual Arts

Five assignments will be collected for each student. The 5th assignment is a final exam or project. The EE will give specific instructions about submitting the final exam/project before the end of each semester.

Visual Arts - The assignments should reflect the student's understanding of the key concepts of the course of study. The grades on these 5 assignments will comprise a significant portion of the student's overall grade. (Suggested grading policy: 50% ES Progress Report; 25% Portfolio; 25% Final or Project).

Five assignments will be collected for each student. The 5th assignment is a final exam or project. One semester is a final and the other semester is a project. Spring 2015, general students will take a final the spring semester. The EE will give specific instructions about submitting the final exam/project before the end of each semester. The samples should be of good quality, neat, readable, and corrected.

Unacceptable samples include: homework with just the answers - this is hard to understand with no reference to what has been completed; or a piece of artwork with no critique about the work. (See below for directions below).

The students may choose from the sample list below for their portfolio.

  1. Chapter reviews answered completely and corrected by ES. Please answer in full sentences and write the name of the textbook, chapter, and pages completed. These should be neat and easy to read.
  2. Chapter or unit assessments corrected by ES or parent
  3. 2-3 Creative projects - Students will produce a minimum of two creative expression projects each semester. The Creative Expression projects will include the use of different media. Suggested activities include: drawing, painting, printmaking, ceramics, fiber/ textiles, photography, computer graphics, video, sculpture. These projects will also include a critique that provides following: name of piece, length of time it took to complete the project, how the piece was made, what materials were used, describe artwork using vocabulary from the elements of art and principles of design. Unacceptable samples include pieces of artwork with no critique attached as described above.
  4. Chapter Summary one page typed and in students own words
  5. Bibliography about an artist that you admire. Please use MLA formatting is required Owl Purdue- link for help
  6. Art Critique Step by Step including Include the following - 1) Identifying information 2) Describe what you see 3) Analyzing How 4) Interpreting 5) Judging (See worksheet on department page)
  7. Visit a museum and write an art critique as described above on a specific art piece. Be sure to include a picture of the art that you are describing.
  8. Research paper on a specific time period for art - such as Renaissance, Baroque, or Enlightenment. Please have the topic approved by your ES and EE prior to beginning this assignment. MLA formatting is required
  9. Create a historical timeline of a musical, theatrical, or dance period - The timeline should give the audience a clear picture of the growth for this period and include at least 5 famous musicians or composers and their significance they contributed. Pictures from the internet are OK. Please have the topic approved by your ES and EE prior to beginning this assignment.
  10. Create a collage using magazine photos on a 9" X 12" piece of paper. This collage can be what the arts means to you. The whole piece of paper needs to be covered with pictures, words, sayings. On the back of the collage, describe in your own voice and how you see yourself using the skills learned in the future.
  11. Research careers in the field of your study and write a one page description of the areas that may interest you including salary, prerequisites, competitive level, how many jobs are available, schooling needed. This can include college choices that offer this program.
