Mathematics Diagnostic Testing Project (MDTP) diagnostic readiness tests, jointly formed and supported by California State University (CSU) and University of California (UC), are used formatively to promote and support student readiness and success in college mathematics courses. MDTP achieves its purpose by developing diagnostic readiness tests aligned to the Common Core State Standards (CCSS). An essential element of the test-development process is an extensive statistical review to ensure that each item tests appropriate knowledge and skill, is reasonably predictive for students from all skill levels, and that the difficulty of the items are not too widespread.

• Teachers and parents can use MDTP diagnostic test results to inform and enhance their teaching practices.
  
  
• CWCS use MDTP diagnostic test data to collectively shape instruction, assessment, support and intervention, and policy.
  
  
• Middle grade students wanting to enroll in advanced coursework in mathematics will be required to complete the MDTP. All incoming grade 9 students will be required to complete the MDTP in compliance with the Mathematics Placement Act of 2015 (SB359). The MDTP is available, but optional, to help determine if students in grades 10-12 are ready for other mathematics courses upon request.
